The book seems to have garnered a fair few good reviews and I am at a loss as to why. Absolute shit – but David has been forgiven mostly. Welcome to St Ambrose Primary School. The analogy is clever but it gets rammed home again and again. I’m sure it’s a good read for some but I need books that captivate me and are full of detail etc. One interesting thing that I walked away with was the confirmation that women are the same, no matter what part of the world they live in.

I would have filled a book with her antics, but Hornby leaves us wanting more. What connections did you see between the mom’s actions and their kids’ actions?

Fun, easy, if fairly predictable read, but I didn’t really warm to any of the female characters. Have you ever felt like Georgie? Naming characters hove Bea and Clover and Heather. The comparison between a school full of mothers and a hive of bees was terribly unsubtle even to the point of giving the main controlling character the name Bea.

Rachel has been unceremoniously dumped as The hive gill hornby best the hive gill hornby. Of the viewpoints proffered on this matter, Rachel’s is the one we hear most.

This is a semi-satirical novel about mums at a small primary school and about the way they revolve around the “queen bee” who runs the fundraising committee. I did find it extremely compelling and couldn’t put it down although the characters were hardly sympat I came across this novel through a review in Hjve Week magazine and while the review wasn’t glowing per se, I decided to give it a go partly because of the subject matter and the author’s pedigree wife of Robert Harris and brother of Nick Hornby.
