In SwellSimeti transforms appropriated images from Brooklyn waterways, such as the Gowanus Canal, into a motorized installation in which simefi public can contemplate the consequences of human activity on our surroundings.
In this case as well, Simeti explores a border, moving along the confines between an idea of art as rooted in the contemporary and one of art separated from both social and iconographic contingencies; the same border that — in an era that today appears very distant, but actually belongs to our most recent past — distinguished siimeti art from decorative art and found its equivalent and its academic justification in the separation between major and minor arts.
